After my group and I asked three people what their opinion on censorship was, we discovered the answers varied. When we asked a woman if she felt it was up to censors on TV or the parent’s responsibility to keep harmful material away from children? She answered, “well I think it is a little of both, you can’t be around your children all the time and when you’re not you need the censors to pick up the slack”. Another woman we asked do you think that censoring things benefits or hurts society as a whole. Without hesitation she said “I don’t think its benefits us…..if you don’t want to watch something don’t watch it. Change the station or the channel, no one is forcing you to watch it.” She then turned back to the book she had been reading before we interrupted her. Finally we asked a young man if he felt that censoring compact disks hurt of benefit music artists. He said “I think it hurts their sales because their choice of language and mannerisms is their right to free speech. To take this away from them would be limiting them on the way they express themselves.” As we collected our answers we headed back to the classroom and I though about what they said and they were all right in a way. So in conclusion I believe that censorship is a combination of all three of these answers.
